MEDIA RELEASE

BANKING OMBUDSMAN SCHEME APPOINTS NEW CHAIR

The Board of the Banking Ombudsman Scheme (BOS) has pleasure in announcing the appointment of Professor Ron Paterson, of the University of Auckland as the new independent Chair of the BOS effective from 1 July 2010.

Professor Paterson will take the place of Sir Ian Barker QC who has served in the role since 1997.

Professor Paterson comes to this position after ten years as Health and Disability Commissioner, a position he discharged with great distinction. He is now a Professor of Law at the University of Auckland. He has also had experience in practising and teaching commercial law.

Professor Paterson will bring to the BOS his experience not only in dispute resolution but in dealing with change. This is a particular advantage in the current environment, as under the Financial Service Providers Act, all financial service providers must join an approved dispute resolution scheme by 1 December this year.

The BOS, established in 1992, has become a leader of industry-based dispute resolution schemes. Professor Paterson is well-qualified to guide the Scheme into the changing landscape for financial dispute providers.
